 Why join the Band?

The real question is 'why not join the band?' Some say time, some say marching isn't for them, some just aren't sure and will decide later. The truth is, college marching band is nothing like high school and the first semester will change your mind forever. The Marching Jayhawks offer KU students a social experience unlike any other, and life long friends are only the beginning.

And what about college life? The Marching Jayhawks are at the center of football game day activities and enjoy loyal support from 50,000 Jayhawk fans at every home game. We haven't even begun to talk about KU basketball. If you aren't sure, try it your first semester here and find out what you are missing. At the very least, you'll walk away with free KU basketball tickets and a lot of new friends!

 Your College Major

The Marching Jayhawks is open to all KU students, regardless of academic major. You don't have to be a music major to join. In fact, over 75% of the band is non-music majors.  We encourage everyone to enroll, regardless of their academic choice.

Music performance majors - the Marching Jayhawks is also for you! Not only do we focus on quality of sound and efficiency in tone production, we provide an active means of practicing these skills. The concepts of tone production, balance, ensemble focus, etc. are a part of every rehearsal. Not only that, you recieve the opportunity to perform in front of hundreds of thousands of audience members at football and basketball games. If you are unsure of the musical benefits, try one semester of the Marching Jayhawks and you will know for sure. Or you could call the principle trumpet in the Chicago Symphony and ask why he marched and participated in drum corps during the summers.

 The College Band Experience

Being in the Marching Jayhawks is different than what you experienced in high school.

    iono
  • College marching band is about energy, excitement, and school spirit. The band plays and the KU football team dances (into the end zone)!
  • Rather than spending months rehearsing the same show, the Marching Jayhawks perform several entertaining shows every season. And since there are no contests at the college level, we design our marching shows to please the audience and fans.
  • We play constantly – before the game, in the stands, during halftime – we play lots and lots of music! You won't get bored.
  • The Marching Jayhawks rehearse only 3 times a week.  Other than our warm-up and run-through on football game days, there are no additional rehearsals. Also, because everyone in the band has experience playing and marching, we are able to work quickly, learning music and drill at a much faster pace.

Did we mention 200 guaranteed friends, even before your first class.

Do we play at all football games?

We perform at all HOME games and usually 1 or 2 away games. This means you’ll receive 1 or 2 weekend vacations for you and 200 of your closest friends, ABSOLUTELY FREE.

 What are the costs?

Cheaper than you would think. Members must pay for the following:

  1. Enrollment in the course - It is a 1-hour credit course. BUT, students may take marching band for zero credit and thus eliminate the cost of tuition.
  2. Flip folder - You probably already have this from high school.
  3. Marching shoes, $35. We use black MTX marching shoes. If you already own a good pair, you’re set. Colorguard uses a black dance shoe, also $35.
  4. $25.00 instrument insurance fee.
  5. Activity/Uniform Fee of $70. $20 is refundable if the uniform is returned clean and in good condition.
  6. Housing fee of $35 (only for students living in the dorms).

What does the band pay for that you don't have to?

  • Official Adidas KU Polo
  • Official Adidas KU Wind Breaker
  • Official Adidas KU Band baseball cap
  • KU Band t-shirt
  • Your uniform (colorguard, winds, and percussion)
  • Food and drinks at every game
  • ALL travel expenses. Students are only responsible for spending money when traveling with the band.
