Camp Overview
The KU Jazz Workshop is an exciting week of instruction and performance in all aspects of jazz with special emphasis placed on small group performance. The workshop faculty includes outstanding performers and teachers offering personal instruction in jazz improvisation, combos, big band, jazz history, and jazz theory with master classes and ensembles tailored to the needs and abilities of each student. Evening student and faculty concerts and jam sessions offer students of all levels the chance to perform and grow in improvisational, small group, and ensemble playing. All classes have a unique student/teacher ratio, which allows the student very individualized instruction.
Theory Placement will take place after the Sunday camper/parent meeting. This jazz theory "exam" is for placement purposes only, to ensure all campers are placed in the theory class that caters to their needs and ability level. Please bring pencils and manuscript paper for this exam and for the week.
Auditions will be scheduled immediately after the theory placement exam. This audition will determine which combo and big band you should be in. Once again, don't let this intimidate you--it's painless! There is no uniform prepared audition music for the KU Jazz Workshop; however, students should bring a short excerpt or selection that they have been working on or performed recently to play for the audition faculty. This can be ANY style of music - a jazz standard or etude is best, but a classical etude, popular song, etc. will also work fine. You will also do some sight-reading in the audition, play some scales, and play a short improvised solo with a play-along CD (most likely a 12-bar blues in B-flat or F; more advanced students will be asked to play an additional selection) provided by the audition faculty. Rhythm section players may be asked to demonstrate certain grooves (i.e., drummers play a "swing" groove, bass players play a walking bass line over a chord progression, etc.) - if you don't know how to do this, don't worry! We'll cover all this and more during the course of the workshop.
Drummers should bring their own drum set, sticks, brushes, mallets, etc. There will be secured, locked rooms to store your equipment. EVERY piece of equipment should be labeled. When you arrive to check in on Sunday, go to your dormitory first, where you will receive instructions on where to unload your drum sets.
Guitar/Bass Players must bring their own amps and patch cords! These will also be stored in secured, locked rooms. Smaller amps are encouraged, as you may be required to move between rooms for rehearsals.
Jam Sessions, supervised by the Jazz Workshop faculty, will be held following the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday night concerts in Murphy Hall.
Faculty Concerts will be presented on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. The Monday and Tuesday evening concerts will feature the Faculty Combo, while the Wednesday evening concert will feature the Faculty Big Band.
Students Concerts will be presented on Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. The Thursday evening Concert will feature all of the Student Jazz Combos. The Friday afternoon concert will showcase the Student Big Bands.
